Survey Project Management – Chapter 8: Basics of First Aid

(Full Chapter Notes + Free PDF + Illustrations)

Surveyors frequently work in remote areas, forests, highways, hills, riversides, and construction zones — places where medical help may not be immediately available.
Therefore, every surveyor must have basic First Aid knowledge to handle injuries, accidents, or emergencies during fieldwork.

Chapter 8 teaches you how to preserve life, prevent further injury, and promote recovery — the three core goals of First Aid.

📌 Overview

First Aid involves:

  • Immediate care to an injured or sick person
  • Preventing further harm
  • Supporting recovery until medical help arrives

Surveyors should always carry a First Aid kit and understand how to handle common injuries.

🧠 What You Will Learn in Chapter 8

✔ Meaning & importance of First Aid
✔ Emergency principles
✔ Symptoms, prevention & response to common injuries
✔ Handling environmental and medical emergencies
✔ Dealing with animal and insect bites
✔ Treating fractures, burns, wounds, bleeding, hypothermia & more

🗂️ 8️⃣ Basics of First Aid

This chapter includes two major sections, covering all essential First Aid conditions surveyors may face.

⛑️ 8.1 First Aid: Preserving Life, Preventing Further Injury & Promoting Recovery

The three main aims of First Aid are known as the Three Ps:

🅿️1. Preserve Life

  • Ensure safety of injured person
  • Check breathing and pulse
  • Perform CPR if necessary
  • Remove from danger (water, fire, traffic, landslide zone)

🅿️2. Prevent Further Injury

  • Do not move injured person unnecessarily
  • Stop bleeding
  • Apply bandages
  • Stabilize fractures
  • Protect from weather (cold/heat)

🅿️3. Promote Recovery

  • Provide reassurance
  • Keep person warm & comfortable
  • Follow basic treatment procedures
  • Call for medical help

These principles guide all First Aid decisions.

🩺 8.2 Basic Definition, Symptoms & Preventive Measures of Common Conditions

Below are the First Aid topics included in the syllabus, with simple explanations + symptoms + First Aid steps + prevention.

🏔️ 1) Altitude Sickness

Caused by traveling to high altitudes (above 2500m) too quickly.

Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue

First Aid

✔ Descend to lower altitude
✔ Give oxygen if available
✔ Provide warm fluids
✔ Allow rest

Prevention

  • Acclimatize slowly
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Stay hydrated

🧠 2) Swelling of Brain or Lungs (HACE / HAPE)

Severe altitude sickness affecting brain or lungs.

Symptoms

  • Confusion
  • Difficulty walking
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness

First Aid

✔ Immediate descent
✔ Oxygen administration
✔ Keep patient warm
✔ Seek emergency medical help

🐝 3) Allergens (Insect Bites)

Common during outdoor surveys.

Symptoms

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Pain
  • In severe cases: breathing difficulty (anaphylaxis)

First Aid

✔ Wash area with clean water
✔ Apply cold compress
✔ Use antihistamine if available
✔ For severe reaction → call emergency help

Prevention

  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and boots

🦴 4) Bone Fractures

Broken bones during slips, falls, or accidents.

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Deformity
  • Inability to move

First Aid

✔ Do NOT move limb unnecessarily
✔ Immobilize using splint
✔ Apply cold pack
✔ Seek medical help immediately

🔥 5) Burns

From fire, hot objects, or chemicals.

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Blisters
  • Charred skin (severe)

First Aid

✔ Wash with cool water (NOT ice)
✔ Cover with clean cloth
✔ Do not break blisters
✔ Seek help for severe burns

😰 6) Choking

Airway blocked by food or objects.

Symptoms

  • Cannot breathe
  • Clutching throat
  • Turning blue

First Aid

✔ Perform Heimlich Maneuver
✔ Hit back between shoulder blades
✔ If unconscious → CPR

🥵 7) Cramps

Muscle tightness from dehydration or overuse.

First Aid

✔ Stretch muscle slowly
✔ Massage area
✔ Drink water with electrolytes

❤️ 8) Heart Attack

A medical emergency caused by blocked blood flow.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain spreading to arm or jaw

First Aid

✔ Call emergency help immediately
✔ Keep person calm
✔ Loosen tight clothes
✔ Give aspirin (if available and not allergic)

🍬 9) Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar)

Common for diabetic surveyors.

Symptoms

  • Thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue

First Aid

✔ Provide insulin (if prescribed)
✔ Encourage water intake
✔ Seek medical help

🥶 10) Hypothermia (Cold Exposure)

Occurs during cold morning surveys or rain.

Symptoms

  • Shivering
  • Confusion
  • Slurred speech
  • Weak pulse

First Aid

✔ Move to warm place
✔ Give warm drinks
✔ Cover with blankets

☠️ 11) Poisoning

Can occur from chemicals, plants, or food.

Symptoms

  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Dizziness

First Aid

✔ Identify poison
✔ Do NOT induce vomiting
✔ Give water
✔ Seek medical help

🐍 12) Snake Bite

Common in forests or rural areas.

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Fang marks
  • Difficulty breathing (poisonous)

First Aid

✔ Keep victim calm
✔ Do NOT suck the venom
✔ Tie bandage above bite (not too tight)
✔ Get medical help immediately

🩸 13) Wounds & Bleeding

First Aid

✔ Apply pressure to stop bleeding
✔ Use clean bandage
✔ Elevate injured part
✔ Clean wound with clean water
✔ Cover to prevent infection

Prevention

  • Wear PPE
  • Use gloves
  • Be careful with tools
