After completing this course, students will be able to:

✅ Understand Map Sheet Numbering Systems used in Nepal
✅ Practice map reproduction and printing techniques
✅ Develop understanding of Digital Cartography and GIS integration

✅ Unit 1: Introduction (4 Hrs)

  • Definition and history of cartography
  • Scope and uses of cartography


✅ Unit 2: Map (6 Hrs)

  • Definition, types, and classification of maps
  • Map scale and drawing/scribing basics
  • Semiology, map design, and layout
  • Typography and typonomy
  • Enlargement and reduction of maps
  • Uses of maps


✅ Unit 3: Branches of Cartography (6 Hrs)

  • Map compilation process
  • Compilation methods for base maps, derived maps, and thematic maps


✅ Unit 4: Graphic Variables (3 Hrs)

  • Definition and importance
  • Visual perception and types of graphic variables


✅ Unit 5: Map Projection (8 Hrs)

  • Introduction and classification
  • Map distortion and scale factor
  • Choice of projection
  • UTM and MUTM projections
  • Nepal’s grid system


✅ Unit 6: Map Sheet Numbering (8 Hrs)

  • International small-scale sheet numbering
  • Topographical and cadastral map sheet numbering systems in Nepal


✅ Unit 7: Generalization (4 Hrs)

  • Definition and aspects of generalization
  • Directives, exaggeration, displacement, and methods


✅ Unit 8: Relief Representation (4 Hrs)

  • Importance and methods of relief representation
  • Spot height, contouring, hachuring, hill shading, layer tinting, 3D models
  • Rock drawing


✅ Unit 9: Colour (3 Hrs)

  • Nature of light and color theory
  • Additive and subtractive colors
  • Color triangle and selection using charts


✅ Unit 10: Digital Cartography (7 Hrs)

  • Introduction to raster and vector models
  • Steps in digital map making
  • Difference between conventional and digital cartography
  • Digital Landscape Model (DLM) & Digital Cartographic Model (DCM)


✅ Unit 11: Map Reproduction (7 Hrs)

  • Map reproduction terminology: positive, negative, tone, screen, etc.
  • Contact and camera photography
  • Diazo reproduction, open window mask
  • Plate-making (analog & digital systems)
  • Quality control and color proof
  • Printing techniques: flat-bed, rotary offset, and digital


🧪 Practical / Laboratory Work (30 Hrs)

1️⃣ Prepare layout for Cadastral Map Sheet (A4) – 4 Hrs
2️⃣ Prepare layout for Topographic Map Sheet (A4) – 4 Hrs
3️⃣ Identify and list visual variables from Nepal’s topo map – 2 Hrs
4️⃣ Demonstrate Topographic Map Sheet Numbering System (Nepal) – 4 Hrs
5️⃣ Demonstrate Cadastral Map Sheet Numbering System (Nepal) – 8 Hrs
6️⃣ Generalization of a given district/municipality boundary – 4 Hrs
7️⃣ Observe color separation sheets for plate making – 2 Hrs
8️⃣ Observe map printing press and reproduction process – 2 Hrs
